BMW Repair Checklist Before Sending Your Student to College – North Carolina

dealership alternative for BMW in Greensboro, NC

Before your undergrad hits the books in the campus library, gets involved with Greek life or tailgates for the big game, have these auto-related items checked by your local BMW repair shop to ensure safety on the road prior to the start of Fall semester.

Engine: English 101 may be a breeze but breaking down on the side of the road due to engine trouble isn’t. Engine problems can range from engine overheating to jerky driving, and more, so have your local BMW mechanic check the hoses, lines, clamps, temperature gauge and your water pump, to make sure everything is in prime operating condition.

Battery: All night cram session for Wednesday’s Midterm can cause headaches (and anxiety) for your college kid, and can be even worse when their BMW doesn’t start and they’re late for their exam the next morning. Be sure to have your local BMW technician check for corrosion, dirt and grime on the battery, as well as for any leaks.

Tires: Put the pedal to the metal (as your undergrad will while writing that essay on The Importance of Social Media in Today’s Marketplace) when it comes to taking your undergrad’s BMW to the nearest BMW service center for an examination of tires. Your BMW mechanic will check and make sure there are no signs of wear, such as bulging and worn treads.

AC/Cooling Systems: 8:00 a.m. class on a Friday morning, no sweat…broken air-conditioner, major sweat! Have your BMW mechanic check the AC and cooling system. A proper inspection of the AC line, filter and seal can help determine any AC-related problems. Also, an examination of air flow around the radiator, the radiator cap (for cracks) and coolant levels can determine if your cooling system is operating correctly.

Brakes: Unusual sounds (like ones that can be heard from the Student Center’s annual karaoke night) coming from your student’s BMW, along with a hard pedal feel, vibrations and pulling to the left or right, can be signs of brake problems. To avoid this, have your brakes routinely checked by your local BMW service center.

Fluids: Dormitory living has its ups and downs. When the flu hits your student’s floor, they’ll be forcing fluids to fight it off. Keep the fluids in their BMW topped off by getting them checked at a local BMW repair shop. Fluids to be checked include oil, power steering, brake and transmission.

By having these auto-related items checked for your child BMW before college starts, the only thing they’ll be worrying about this semester is gaining the Freshman 15 and what to wear to the party on Thursday night.

BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes-Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS – Greensboro, NC

bmw-4-series-coupe-mercedes-c-class-750x500

BMW holds, from time to time, driving events featuring their products and competitors’ product for comparison. This year it is the Un4gettable Test Drive, featuring the BMW 4 series coupe. Coming along for the party were, amongst others, a Cadillac CTS and a Mercedes-Benz C350. All three of these sporting coupes are available in rear wheel drive or all wheel drive.

On paper there is enough equivalence to make the comparison of the three interesting. One caveat before beginning however, the Cadillac CTS is aimed more towards the 5 series, E-Class as a competitor, not towards the 4 or C-Class. The Cadillac has a longer wheelbase and is half a foot plus longer than either the C350 or 435i. But, importantly, pricing is similar for the three.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

Exterior Styling

While style is often a matter of personal taste, none of these coupes are without their charms. These three are aimed directly at the heart of the premium sports market and have to have a broad appeal. The companies’ design language has to be on its best behavior with these cars, though there is some leeway because they are the two-door variants of the more popular four door models. While they are expected to be cleanly styled, they can get away with some flourishes.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

All three coupes hit the target for sportiness and elegance. The Cadillac ‘Art and Science’ design language features sharp edges and daring shapes. The Mercedes-Benz C350 styling features a long flowing line that runs from the fenders, below the door handles, across the rear fender before it up ticks to the rear deck. It is typical understated elegance from Mercedes, a manufacturer that does not want its cars ever to feel ‘out of date’. And, of course, the BMW displays the traditional BMW styling hallmarks.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

There’s more to like than dislike on the three, though I can point to at least one feature on each I dislike. The front fender vent on the BMW is one, the ‘string of pearl’ LED DRL lamps on the C350 is another, and the slab sides of the Cadillac could stand some additional sculpting. But even with those quibbles – which some will disagree with – all three are handsome.

Interiors

Coupes are inherently drivers’ cars and their interiors should reflect that orientation. Gauges and controls should be readily accessible by the driver. The driver, and front seat passenger’s, comfort – over the long haul – should trump styling silliness. And all three coupes deliver.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

All three coupes’ seats were of the ‘sit on’, not ‘sit in’ variety. Often seat bolstering is soft, which can be comfortable over short distances, but decent firm support is needed for comfort in a machine that will cover long distances and each coupe had good long distance seats. Leather surfaces were available for all three, however, choosing the leather seating option on the C350 precludes selecting the Sport Package.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

Instrumentation on the C350 and CTS subordinate the tachometer to a large central speedometer, whereas on the 435i the speedo and tach get equal billing. That could be because neither the Cadillac or Mercedes-Benz are available with a manual transmission.

The Mercedes-Benz and BMW have push button start, the Cadillac uses a rotating knob on the steering column – a keyless key if you will. The center IP stacks of all three contain a variety of buttons and knobs to control HVAC and audio, with the BMW concentrating on keeping controls higher on the dash than the other two coupes.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

Materials used to cover the surfaces of the dash and styling were all very good with the exception of the ‘plastic metal’ that covered the center stack of the Cadillac. It looked promising from afar but when it’s touched, there is no heat transfer which immediately identifies it as something it’s not. Wood (even a picture of wood), piano black, faux carbon fiber are alternatives, and almost anything would be better in the CTS than ‘plastic metal’.

Handling

Over a mixed loop of freeway and surface streets (including some pavement under construction) all three coupes showed they were biased towards performance, with the BMW having an optional set of suspension/transmission/steering settings. Steering on all three coupes was quick and direct and delivered useful feedback.

Each of the three coupes felt poised and that reflects all three’s use of ‘front engined-rear wheel drive’, balanced platforms. Cadillac uses the Alpha platform and like the BMW 4 series it features a near 50/50 weight distribution. The C350 is based on the W204 chassis and it too is well balanced.

The edge here is to the flexibility of the optional BMW ‘Sport +/Sport/Comfort/Eco’ settings. While both the Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz acquitted themselves well for all around handling, the optional BMW suspension settings give it just a bit more usability.

Drivetrain

All three coupes were equipped with six cylinder engines, the BMW an inline six, while the Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz come with a V6 (60 degree V angle). All three engines produce similar horsepower, but the BMW has a decided advantage on torque. While the 435i has the smallest displacement, the 3.0L N55 is the only turbocharged engine of the group.

The three coupes had 8,7,and 6 speed automatic transmissions, with only the BMW available with a manual transmission option. The 435i 8 speed is the familiar ZF gearbox and can be placed in manual mode and shifted via the optional paddle shifters. Putting the 435i in Sport or Sport+ modes optimizes the shift quality of the transmission.

The 7-speed automatic in the C350 also had a Sport mode available and paddle shifters. Using sport mode in the C350 provided good crisp shifts. And while trundling around city streets, the Economy mode provided unobtrusive and frugal shifting. This is a good gearbox.

The 6-speed automatic on the CTS was, however, decidedly non-sporting. Shifts were agonizingly slow compared to the 435i or C350. It’s as if a request for a downshift was a suggestion to the gearbox and not a demand. There has been some talk of Cadillac going to an 8 speed automatic, and it cannot happen too soon. The gearbox is the CTS’s Achilles’ heel.

Conclusion

It should come as no surprise, seeing as how biased I am towards manual transmissions, that the BMW 435i would be my first choice, but it comes – when optioned as tested – at a fairly steep price.

The Mercedes-Benz C350 surprised me, this is a car I could see owning, it was both sufficiently sporting and comfortable – a nice cocoon of an interior to coddle the driver and passenger as the miles fly by; a good car.

The Cadillac is another proposition however. Until Cadillac addresses the shift quality of the CTS’s gearbox, and decides to put something other than ‘plastic metal’ on the center stack, I wouldn’t consider it.

BMWBLOG Test Drive: BMW 435i Coupe vs. Mercedes Benz C350 vs. Cadillac CTS

So, there was a 750i available, and being a sucker for big sedans, I asked if I could have a go in it. Sure, was the response and off I went. Odd, there are M sill plates on the 750i.

The big sedan’s cabin was superbly luxurious. The leather, wood, and metal oozing elegance. The seating was perfect and the controls were all where you expect them to be in a BMW (there is a real continuity from model to model in BMW interiors, even if furnishings and material quality differs). However, the speedo and tach are replaced with what might best be called video game gauges. They were off-putting to me and as you go through the ‘Sport+/Sport/Comfort/Comfort+/Eco’ modes the gauges change colors and markings.

But once underway the big BMW impresses. It feels like the proverbial bank vault – a solidity that big German sedans exude. And then there was an opening on the freeway that the twin turbo V8 could exploit and off the 750i went. What great acceleration (and a wonderful V8 snarl for a soundtrack to accompany it). Civilized – but nevertheless capable of much mischief.

What got my attention, when back on surface streets, was the ‘Comfort+’ setting. There was a bit of surface street construction, pavement misaligned by height and other bumps and dips, that Comfort+ soaked up without hesitation. Comfort+ is there for passenger comfort, and often, in cars as big as the 7, it’s the back seat that is important. The 750i has a decent back seat – but it was not as spacious as I’d like in a big sedan, which would naturally lead to the L version. Could they build be an M750iL? Please. (Of course they can, order a 750Li with the M sport option!) The 750i is a blast to drive, just what you expect from BMW – maker of driver’s cars.

Can the M4 do itself proud on Anglesey circuit against a proper sports car, the Porsche 911 Carrera?

BMW Greensboro, NC

The “base model,” known as the 911 Carrera, is fitted with a 3.4-liter flat-six that produces 350 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 287 lb-ft of torque at 5,600 rpm. Output is sent to the rear wheels via either a seven-speed manual or the PDK seven-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The new M3 and M4 use a 3.0 liter turbocharged engine that produces 425 HP and 560 Nm (413 lb-ft) of torque. The car2015 BMW M4 vs. 2014 Porsche 911 Carrera Test Drive weighs under 1,500 kg (3,300 lbs). From 0-100 km/h (0-62), the 2014 BMW M4 runs in 4.1 seconds with DCT while the M3 runs the same distance in 4.3 seconds, with the same transmission.

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package Test Drive – Greensboro, NC

2014-bmw-m6-coupe-test-drive-review-7

BMW M6 Coupe is one of those cars that turns heads wherever you go. And what a better place to drive the 2014 BMW M6 Coupe in Sakhir Orange other than the beautiful city of Los Angeles.

BMWBLOG headed to California to test drive BMW’s top coupe, the 2014 BMW M6 Coupe equipped with the new Competition Package. With the $7,300 Competition Package, the 2014 M6 Coupe is an even faster and more focused version of BMW’s 6 Series-based Coupe. Power was raised by 15 horsepower to 575 hp and now sprint times are better than ever: 4.1 seconds or 3.9 seconds with Launch Control.

But it’s the updated M6 Coupe all about the power?

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

INTERIOR DESIGN AT ITS FINEST

BMW is not aiming the M6 Coupe at just the “Ultimate Driver” but rather is focusing on a larger demographic that buys cars for the total package. And in this case, it means a top notch cabin to match the exterior design and power. On the inside you get, in standard form, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition/entry, leather upholstery, 16-way power heated front seats, front seat memory functions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, carbon-fiber interior trim, interior ambient lighting, Bluetooth phone and streaming audio; iDrive interface with a 10.2-inch display; a rear-view camera; a navigation system with voice commands; smartphone app integration and USB/iPod integration.

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

Upgrades given to our tester were the Executive package ($3800) which includes LED headlights with automatic high beams, a heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats, a Head-Up Display, massage functionality for the front seats and a power rear sunshade. Furthermore, our test car came with the best sound system on the market, the 16 -speaker Bang & Olufsen, Night Vision system with pedestrian detection and extended leather upholstery.

And to seal the deal, the BMW M6 Coupe can be ordered with the Driver Assistance package ($1900) which includes automatic high-beam control, a lane-departure warning system, a blind-spot monitor and a camera system with 360 degree view.

Quite a lot of features that will satisfy even the most demanding customer.

GREAT ON THE ROAD, PERFECT FOR THE TRACK

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

Along with the power increase, the Competion Package brings to the M6 Coupe a revised suspension and damping systems, and more tautly tuned stabilizer bars. In the 2014 BMW M6 this adjustment has resulted in a lowering of the car by around 10 millimeters. The Competition Package also has stiffer front axle while the Active M Differential offers improved traction.

The M Dynamic mode of the DSC (Dynamic Stability Control) system is even more acutely geared to sporty handling characteristics. The package additionally includes exclusively designed 20-inch M light-alloy wheels style 601M with performance tires.

The sport exhaust system gets an upgrade also and now comes with black chrome tailpipes and BMW says it’s positioned between the stock exhaust system and the M Performance Exhaust system, but not made out of titanium.

Last but not least, the $9,250 Carbon Ceramic Brakes were included as well, one of those options that you don’t know what to make of until you really try it.

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

We first sampled the M6 Coupe with Competition Package at the famous Estoril Race Track and we were blown away by the raw power delivered by the tuned-up M6.

But how does it handle on the road?

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

To find out, we spent 10 days with the 2014 M6 Coupe driving up and down Pacific Coast Highway before heading for a long, straight drive to Las Vegas. The combination between twisties and long straights gave us the chance to sample the M6 as a corners’ warrior but also as a modern and elegant Gran Tourer.

Just like the regular M6, the Competition Package model feels very agile for a car that weighs 4255 lbs. Most likely because there was a change made to the suspension. Even with the switchable dampers in their softest Comfort mode, the ride is a bit stiffer and more responsive to driver’s commands. Moving over to Sport Mode and you can instantly feel the car flexing its muscles, increasing its roar and ready to take on the road. And if you’re still not satisfied and need more thrill and raw power, push the Sport+ button and the M6 Coupe changes its character completely. Now the car is sharper and more agile, cutting through corners with precision and confidence. The Carbon Ceramic Brakes are definitely a huge help.

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

When aggressively attacking the PCH tight corners, the abundant grip of the Michelin Pilot Sport rubber simply didn’t let go, once again increasing our confidence on the road.

The other big change is in the steering which delivers better road feedback to the driver. The firmed-up suspension and new bushes give the steering a sharper response and doesn’t feel as light as before.

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

The twin-turbo V8 with its 15 hp extra might not feel like a huge upgrade and truth is that it is hard to feel the extra ponies on regular roads. Turbo lag is still there at low rpm and in Comfort mode, but it slowly dissipates north of the 3000 rpm zone and especially when the damping system is set to Sport+. Now the responses are near-instantaneous and makes us forget, for a second, that this is still a big, heavy coupe.

The DCT still isn’t our favorite dual-clutch transmission, but only because of the veto power of the Launch Control. Even after experiencing it before on the track, we still had a hard time getting the right combination. But here are some of the steps to take:

  1. Engine has to be at the optimal temperature
  2. Drive Logic has to be in S3
  3. Press slightly on the brake pedal
  4. Push gear lever forward and hold it until Launch Control is indicated
  5. Push the throttle until it revs up to 3000 rpm
  6. Release the gear lever

Yes, that all has to happen!

On long straights and through the boring desert leading to Las Vegas, the 2014 BMW M6 Coupe acted as a gentleman, offering a calm and safe ride, without being overly boring. And when entering the Las Vegas Strip, heads turn instantly. That Sakhir Orange really stands out in the impressive artificial light generated in Vegas.

Fuel consumption is not great, but when a car has a price sticker of a $120,000, gas money is just change. We recorded 13 mpg city/19 mpg highway and 15-16 mpg in combined driving, depending on the land conquered.

2015 BMW M6 Coupe Competition Package BMWBLOG Test Drive

SHOULD I BUY ONE?

At $120,000, fully loaded, the 2014 BMW M6 Coupe is already an expensive car, so if we were to trade off something that would be the Competition Package while retaining the amazing Carbon Ceramic Brakes.

Some pundits may also say that the less practical and slightly cheaper Porsche 911 is a better ride, and they might be right, but the purchasing decision comes down to your needs, in this case, a pure sports car versus a gran tourer that does well on track as well.

Oh, and this one of the last GT luxury cars that comes in a manual also. If you fancy that…

2014 BMW 228i Coupe – Greensboro, NC

bmw-228i-detroit-auto-show-017

The 228i Coupe is the entry-level vehicle in BMW’s 2 series line-up, offering rear wheel drive and compact size. Powering the 228i is a 2.0 liter four cylinder that produces 240 horsepower and 255 torques. The 228i isn’t exactly a lightweight at 3334 pounds, but according to a recent review by MotorTrend, it gets along just fine. Check out some highlights from MotorTrend’s review.

Despite not having a substantial weight advantage, the 228i does feel sprightlier than the four-cylinder 3 Series. The power is more than adequate to propel the dimensionally smaller 2 Series, and as always the eight-speed automatic transmission makes the most of that power.

Whether I was maneuvering through freeway traffic or pulling into a narrow parking spot, the 2’s smaller size made a noticeable difference. That extra awareness instills more confidence when attacking curvy on-ramps, allowing the driver to really push the limits. And with the 2 Series’ competent chassis, those limits are relatively high. Turn-in is sharp and immediate, and the car will hold its arc without much fuss or noticeable body roll. Part of this can be attributed to the M Sport model’s Adaptive M suspension, which includes electronically controlled shock absorbers.

Brake feel is confident and linear, which could have something to do with the $650 M Sport brakes, an optional package that adds larger rotors at either end, along with blue-painted calipers.

The interior is styled in typical BMW fashion, and resembles that of a scaled-down 3 Series. The sport seats that come with the M Sport package provide excellent support, with plenty of side bolstering to keep you in place when the need to carve a few canyon roads arises. Back seat passengers won’t be terribly uncomfortable either.

The bottom line is that the 2 Series is a huge win for BMW enthusiasts everywhere, and even if it isn’t the reborn 2002 that BMW’s marketing campaign says it is, it still marks a return to form for the roundel brand.

BMW Greensboro NC- BMW Recalls 156,000 Vehicles With 6-Cylinder Engines

11BMW-image-superJumbo

BMW is recalling about 156,000 vehicles equipped with 6-cylinder engines because a defect could cause stalling or engine damage, the automaker said in a news release Thursday. The action comes almost two years after the automaker began fixing the same models in China, according to a report the automaker filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

BMW said “in very rare cases the bolts holding the variable camshaft timing (Vanos) unit housing may become loose or, in extreme cases, break.” In such cases, the driver would be alerted by a check-engine warning light. Power to the engine could be reduced and “if ignored, the problem can become progressively worse, eventually leading to no-start conditions, stalling and engine damage.” Vanos is BMW’s variable-valve timing technology.

The models affected by the recall are the 1 Series, 3 Series, 5 Series, 5 Series Gran Turismo, X3, X5, X6 and Z4 from the 2010-12 model years, as well as the 2012 6 Series.

The automaker is not aware of any accidents related to the problem, David Buchko, a spokesman for BMW, said in an email.

In its report to N.H.T.S.A., BMW said that in 2011 it had about a dozen warranty claims “for various malfunctions involving the Vanos system.” BMW received some additional complaints in 2012 – sometimes the vehicles stalled, sometimes they didn’t.

In June 2012, as complaints worldwide mounted, BMW began replacing the bolts in Vanos units in China. But the automaker decided not to do the same in the United States “due to the very low rate of occurrence.” However, as more cases of stalling were reported in China, authorities there insisted this month on a safety recall.

BMW says it then decided to conduct a recall in the United States as well. For that recall, it will replace the four bolts suspected of causing the problem on each unit.

The automaker said it was also offering an extended warranty on about 170,000 additional 2010-12 BMW vehicles equipped with 6-cylinder engines. Those “experience much lower rates of Vanos bolt failure, will receive an extended warranty to address this condition.”

A BMW spokesman could not immediately be reached to identify those models and detail the length of the warranty.
