BMW M4 – “Ultimate Racetrack.”

BMW M4

When a powerful sports car meets maritime giant: the “Ultimate Racetrack” takes a blockbuster approach to show what happens when a professional race car driver pushes a skilled master of curves like the BMW M4 to the limit with risky manoeuvres. The high-precision automobile drifts over the asphalt, wheels smoke, and bits of rubber fly through the air. The action in these initial scenes almost takes your breath away, but the real gasp comes when it’s clear that the 431 hp race car is pushing the limits of possibility – skirting the edges of an aircraft carrier. And it’s not docked in a calm harbour – it’s surging through the open sea. No barriers. No margin for error. A deep plunge is only a hair’s breadth away. That doesn’t bother the M4, though. Its confident sound rises above the waves as they beat the ship’s bow.

Of course, it’s not so easy to access this level of excitement. Unless you’re a racing professional and have good contacts with the navy, that is. But one thing’s for sure – we are always up for a fantastic drifting adventure with the M4! Are you?

BMW M5 Competition beats Mercedes-AMG GT 63S 4-Door in Autobild test

A lot of comparisons, performed by the automotive media, are often delivering a very tight result in numerous disciplines. Most of the time there is no clear winner since advantages and disadvantages can be found on both sides.

In the case of the BMW F90 M5 Competition, which was tested by Auto Bild Sports Cars against the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S 4-Door Coupé, the picture looks slightly different. The high-performance sedan from Munich was able to beat its opponent from Affalterbach in almost every discipline.

BMW F90 M5 Competition

The acceleration from a standstill to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) on a straight track is the most balanced figure between the two. It takes the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S 4-Door only 3.0 seconds to reach 100 km/h which is only a tenth of seconds faster than the M5.

However, the picture looks a bit different at higher speeds. After reaching 160 km/h (100 mph), the BMW M5 Competition passes the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S and is a tenth of a seconds faster at 200 km/h (124 mph). Both cars are also extremely close to each other when it comes to elasticity, with small advantages for one or the other, every now and then.

Mercedes AMG GT 63S 830x553
Mercedes-AMG GT 63S

The next challenge for both high-performance cars is the German Sachsenring, a racetrack in Saxony which was opened in 1927 for the first time. A track time of 1:34.39 marks a close win for the BMW M5 Competition ahead of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S with a time of 1:34.45. In addition, the M5 is also able to reach a higher top speed on the racetrack. To put these figures in perspective: An earlier test with the Mercedes-AMG E 63S showed a track time of 1:35.90 minutes for the Mercedes.

The lightweight concept of the BMW M GmbH plays an important role to contribute to the superior test results of the BMW M5. Thanks to 188 kg (414 pounds) lower weight, the M5 is also winning the race at the pump as it only uses 13.8 l/100 km (17 mpg) compared to 14.6 l/100 km (16.1 mpg). Even though the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S can conceal its pounds well, they naturally play a role in all driving dynamics areas. Another example is the braking power value that the BMW M5 clearly wins with a warm brake.

Mercedes-AMG GT 63S

Mercedes-AMG GT 63 S 4MATIC+ is the fastest series production four-seater on the North Loop;Fuel consumption combined: 11.3 l/100 km, CO2 emissions combined: 257 g/km*

But although the lighter BMW M5 Competition is faster to 200 km/h, delivers a faster lap time on the Sachsenring, brakes better and consumes less, in the end, both high-performance sedans are extremely close to each other. However, maybe the price could make the difference for indecisive customers. Both, the base price as well as the price of the test car of the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S is almost 39,000 € ($44,359) higher compared to the BMW M5 Competition.

The entire test with additional data and impressions of the BMW M5 Competition and the Mercedes-AMG GT 63S is available in the current issue of Auto Bild Sports Cars. Our review of the BMW M5 can be found here. BMW M5 Competition featured Mercedes-AMG GT 63S

It has not been a great week for the BMW Communications department. The scheduled unveil of the new 2020 BMW 7 Series Facelift was scheduled for next week, but Internet leakers got an early start. Yesterday we saw a photo leak from Russia giving us a partial view of the car, followed today by a full unveil of the front-end.

Hours later, someone responsible for the BMW online configurators have uploaded the full views of the new 7 Series Facelift. The images show the 7er in Alpine White and in the M760Li, 750Li M Sport and regular 750Li configurations.2020 BMW 7 Series Facelift 02 830x467

The images also show the 2020 7 Series with the M Sport and Luxury trims, as well as different wheel options. While the front-end is not a surprise anymore, the side view confirms our previous reports – the hockey stick design has changed, it now sits upright and extends further into the side view.

In the back, we’re getting slightly redesigned tail lights connected by a slim light bar. The rear bumper has also gone through a redesign, based on the specific trim.

While these seem to be official computer generated images, we’re still waiting for the full set of videos and photos which will likely keep their release schedule next week.

2019 BMW X4 Test Drive – Drives Better than Original

2019 BMW X4

Frim fastback sedans to coupe-inspired crossovers like the BMW X4, automakers have spent the last decade carving new ground with “in-between” vehicle segments.

The X4 is considered as a Sport Activity Coupe. BMW came up with this terminology when it brought the X6 for the 2018 model year. It classifies it as SUV, but does not zero in on the utility. Instead, it’s all the more about versatility that defines the new the X4.

2019 BMW X4 Greensboro NC

The immense popularity of the first generation X4 that was introduced for the 2014 model years actually prompts BMW to come up with the second generation this year. The objective is to let it compete the Mercedes Benz GLC-Couple. However, the X4 has very tight competition.

The 2019 BMW X4 is slightly longer, taller, and wider than its previous segment. BMW Greensboro promises that it would offer a bit more cabin space an actually usable rear seat. Let’s check its popularity among buyers.

Look and Feel:

Much like the original X6, the first X4 arrived with tall ride height, pronounced fenders, and slopping roof. To keep up the downsized venison of the X6, the X4 had to go way to form, and backseat headroom and cargo space suffered.

Available in either the XDrive 30i trim or the more performance oriented M40i, the X4 receives some optional packages that make it feel truly luxurious. Standard features include power-folding heated side mirrors, power rear hatch, fog lights, 19-inch wheels, panoramic moon-roof, and rain-sensing wipers.

Inside, it is offered with an audio system with 12 speakers and HD Radio, automatic climate control, 10-way power front seats, leather seats, one-touch power windows, and a large 10.20 inch iDrive touchscreen, which equips it with real time traffic information and Apple CarPlay integration.

Performance:

Powered by a 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the xDrive30i generates 248 horsepower and 258 pound feet of torque. Moving up to the X4M40i boasts a 3.0-liter Twin-Power turbocharged 6-cylinder producing 355 horsepower and 365 pound feet of torque. An 8-speed automatic transmission sends power to BMW’s xDrive all wheel drive system.

Safety:

It receives the standard safety features including a reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, impact airbags, etc. The Driving Assistance Package equips the vehicle with blind spot monitoring and lane-departure warning.

Overall the car is impressive. To ensure long life expectancy of its major and minor components, be sure to take it to the nearby BMW Greensboro NC Center.

4 Top Reasons for a BMW Engine Overheating

bmw engine

Owning a BMW is like a dream come true. For many, it remains only a dream, while in a few cases, the dream gets fulfilled. Now just imagine how annoying it could be when you are driving to attend an urgent meeting only to encounter overheating under the hood. Let’s find out some causes of engine overheating.

Auto Body Shop Greensboro for BMW Service

Coolant Leak

Your BMW’s engine should treated with coolant in order to keep the temperature of the engine in check. The summer season takes a toll on the engine, causing a coolant leak. Air enters into the system through the leak, creating a pocket of air that affects the coolant flow. Inadequate coolant flow or coolant leaks are major signals of engine overheating. To be more specific, without coolant, the engine fails to maintain its optimal temperature, notes BMW service Greensboro expert.

Clogged Cooling System

As stated before, when coolant fails to properly flow through BMW’s engine, a temperature malfunction arises. A clogged cooling system is the result of one of the few causes such as, a malfunctioning thermostat, debris, or natural buildup. A contaminated cooling system cannot help circulate the coolant, leading to the overheating of the engine.

Wrong Type of Coolant

Believe it not not, the types of coolant required vary from car to car. More so, what type of coolant you will need particularly depends on what type of conditions you are in. For BMW, you will need a specific type of coolant. Hence, it is important to choose the right type of coolant for your engine, for the viscosity must match or you might land up with overheating issues. To gather more knowledge on it, be sure to go through your owner’s manual. In case you are not unable to understand it, contact the manufacturer directly. BMW makes its own brand of coolant as well, which one might consider buying.

Water Pump Failure

According to body shop Greensboro experts, the water pump is a vital part of the cooling system. The pump is what helps keep the circulation of coolant in tact, when it begins to show signs of wear, therefore, should be replaced to avoid overheating. Procrastinating with the process of replacement means you are sure to encounter overheating.

Give Up Your Bad Habits to Keep Your BMW Engine in Good Health

The engine in your BMW is an important mechanical device that keeps your vehicle running smoothly. Proper care and regular maintenance is necessary to keep the engine in top health. At the same time, give up certain bad driving habits to avoid any damage to the engine.

bmw service greensboro

Frequent Redlining

On the tachometer of your vehicle, you will notice some red lines. This area, marked usually in red, shows maximum speed at which an engine is engineered to operate. While driving one should resist the urge to go into that red zone because the engine can’t sustain those constant high revs. Frequent redlining may subsequently damage the engine, for it keep the engine incredibly hot. Moreover, it can also affect other important components, such as the transmission and valve train. In cases like this, take your vehicle to the nearby BMW service Greensboro.

Driving Away Immediately

Driving away immediately after turning on the vehicle may cause the expensive damage to the engine. When the vehicle is stationary for extended period of time, the oil gets thick and does not a protective coat over the moving parts like it should. Give your engine run a while after turning it on. Let the heat warm up the oil enough to properly lubricate all these important components.

Not Changing the Oil

Oil is the lifeblood of your engine. It is most essential substance that keeps all those moving parts running smoothly. Oil also helps keep the engine cool and clean. If you do not treat your vehicle to an oil change as recommended, you could be causing serious damage to your engine. Check the engine oil level at regular interval and get regular oil changes to ensure your engine can survive long.

Filling the Radiator with Water

The radiator plays a vital role in keeping your engine cool, notes one of the BMW repair experts. If the engine is cold, the recommended practice is to open the radiator cap and top up it with a mixture of water and coolant. Adding just water may cause major damage to the engine. If that water freezes during the winter, it could result in a massive crack in your engine block.

Ignoring the Check Engine Light

Many drivers tend ignore the Check Engine Light if it comes on. Usually, the light can come on due to numerous reasons. It might come on due to the gas cap not being on tight enough, or it can also come on if the catalytic converter is failing. All these eventually cause a massive damage to the engine. If the Check Engine Light comes on, it would be great to have your vehicle checked by a mechanic.

BMW’s Customer Racing program has grown immensely over the last few years. For the longest time, if you wanted a BMW race car, you bought a road car and then spent a lot of money turning it into a race car. With the growth of the FIA GT3-specification, BMW decided to join Porsche, Audi Sport, and Mercedes-AMG with a manufacturer-developed customer race car with the BMW Z4 GT3.

BMW GT 4

The BMW Z4 GT3 saw some success, but it was in limited numbers as the high cost was only for the biggest of customer racing teams. Then in 2014, BMW unveiled a customer racing car for the masses with the BMW M235i Racing. It took a couple years but, the M235i Racing has finally developed a large customer base around the world and proved that there was a market for BMW race cars. So in 2017, BMW unveiled the M4 GT4 to fill the gap between the M235i Racing and M6 GT3, which replaced the Z4 GT3 in 2016.

But what if you want to dip your toes in the water first? Well, BMW is now offering the BMW M Race Track GT Training! Here is the description for this new program:

This training course is an absolute sensation for drivers with courage and confidence. Anyone who has ever sat behind the wheel of a BMW M4 GT4 won’t forget the experience for a long, long time. Good driving skills are an absolute prerequisite. After all, this thoroughbred racing car carries the already intensive driving experience into a totally new dimension – and is a heart-stopper for motorsport fans.

Reduced to the bare essentials, the cockpit of the BMW M4 GT4 lets you experience the spectacular sound of the engine, breathtaking acceleration, the powerful race brake system and driving on Slick tires. Professional instructors, including active racing drivers, guide you step-by-step to the ultimate limits of driving dynamics and the ideal line.

If you have already participated in a BMW M race track training course, you will be eligible to register for this program. You will experience two days of intense track driving with technical talks, supervised drives, and data analysis of your sessions. To make it feel like a true race experience, you’ll go through a custom seat fitting, will use full fire-resistant driving gear, and will have team supervision throughout the program.

This new training course will be held at a few tracks across Europe including the Red Bull Ring in Austria, Sachsenring in Germany, and Mugello in Italy. Considering that just the cost of an M4 GT4 is almost $200,000, it makes the €4,480 registration fee seem fairly reasonable.

BMW maintenance plan NO longer transferable to 2nd owner [UPDATE]

auto body shop Greensboro NC

One of the best innovations in car buying in recent years is the rise of no-cost scheduled maintenance programs. Many people feel really anxious about taking their car in for service, and these deals help mitigate that somewhat. Obviously, it’s not free for automakers to implement the offers, and now BMW is altering the way its four-year, 50,000-mile Maintenance Program works for some owners. “To keep such an offer sustainable we had to make a change,” said Kenn Sparks, Manager of Business Communications at BMW North America, to Autoblog via email.

The original person to buy or lease the model isn’t going to see any difference, but the program is no longer transferable to a second owner, unless that person is in the owners household. Those people include includes parents, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, in addition to someone like a spouse or children. The original owner just has to advise BMW of new user. “The program change will affect 2nd owners and for them BMW is introducing an optional full-maintenance product that covers the vehicle up to 100,000 miles,” said Sparks. Scroll down to read the entire announcement.

UPDATE: We have confirmed with BMW of Canada that this only applies to the United States. “This does not apply to Canadian BMW maintenance coverage. The U.S. program is specific to the vehicle owner, whereas the Canadian program follows the vehicle and is transferrable.”

The BMW Maintenance Program

For model year 2015 or later vehicles sold or leased by an authorized BMW center on or after July 1, 2014, BMW Maintenance Program coverage is provided for the exclusive benefit of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a new vehicle, sales demonstrator vehicle, Aftersales Mobility Program (AMP) vehicle, or BMW Group company vehicle from an authorized BMW center in the United States (including Puerto Rico). Accordingly, BMW Maintenance Program coverage, with one exception, is not transferable to subsequent purchasers, owners, or lessees. The sole exception to the non-transferability of BMW Maintenance Program coverage is that household transfers – transfers within the United States (including Puerto Rico) to members of the household of the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a BMW vehicle from an authorized BMW center – will not terminate BMW Maintenance Program coverage. Household transfers are limited solely to transfers to a current or former spouse or spousal equivalent, child, sibling, parent, grandparent, or grandchild from the initial purchaser, owner, or lessee of a vehicle. In the event of a household transfer, purchasers, owners, or lessees of a BMW vehicle should promptly advise their authorized BMW center to document and confirm the household transfer for purposes of BMW Maintenance Program coverage. The payoff of a loan on a vehicle by the initial purchaser and the purchase of a leased vehicle by the initial lessee are not considered transfers for purposes of BMW Maintenance Program coverage.

The BMW Maintenance Program covers all factory recommended maintenance as determined by the Condition Based Service (CBS) system. Additional specific items that need replacement due to normal wear and tear, and that are not covered by the original New Vehicle Limited Warranty – such as brake pads, brake rotors, and wiper blade inserts – are included, provided wear and tear exceeds BMW wear limits. Any applicable adjustments required due to normal operating conditions are also included.

Exclusions from coverage include the following:

Items reimbursable under your New Vehicle Limited Warranty

Gasoline and diesel fuel

Gasoline and diesel fuel additive

Diesel glow plugs

Diesel particulate filter

Windshield washer additive (except when in conjunction with scheduled maintenance)

Tires, wheel alignment, tire balance and rotation

Parking brake shoes/linings

Reset Tire Pressure Monitor

Wear and tear of soft trim items, such as: seats, carpets, moldings, headliner, door panels and all chrome trim

Damage, including consequential, which results from negligence, improper operation of the vehicle, wear and tear or deterioration due to driving habits or conditions, improper repair, environmental influences, flood, accident or fire damage, road salt corrosion, alteration, installation of non-genuine BMW accessories, or use of improper, poor quality or contaminated fuel

Altered or unreadable Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or odometer irregularities or vehicles where the true mileage cannot be determined

BMW Maintenance or repair after the vehicle is deemed a total loss

Maintenance or repairs performed by other than an authorized BMW center within the United States or Puerto Rico

‘Topping off’ low fluids (e.g., engine oil, antifreeze, washer fluid, etc.) except when done in conjunction with a scheduled maintenance or other required maintenance work (as outlined in the customized maintenance checklist printout) that is performed during an applicable Maintenance Program period
Vehicles used in competitive events

Oil changes performed outside the recommended maintenance intervals as indicated by the Condition Based Service

Any other vehicle-specific exclusions described in the Service and Warranty Booklet included with the vehicle
