2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe Poised to Take on Mercedes CLA

https://static.carsdn.co/cldstatic/wp-content/uploads/bmw-2-series-gran-coupe-2020-01-angle--blue--exterior--front.jpg

  Competes with: Mercedes-Benz CLA, Mercedes-Benz A-Class sedan, Audi A3

Looks like: A stylish premium small sedan with a few more hints of the 2020 Kia Forte than of the 2020 CLA’s drama

Drivetrains: 228-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder (228i xDrive) or 301-hp, turbocharged 2.0-liter four (M235i xDrive); eight-speed automatic and standard all-wheel drive

Hits dealerships: March 2020

BMW has rolled out a new entry-level sedan that will compete head-to-head with the redone 2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA sedan. The 2020 2 Series Gran Coupe, also a sedan with the Euro-trendy “four-door coupe” silhouette, slides into the BMW lineup below the 3 Series sedans and joins the 2 Series rear-wheel-drive coupe and convertible in name, though it is based on a BMW front-wheel drive platform like the X1 and X2 crossovers. The new model will be displayed in November at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show and will go on sale here in March.

There will be two versions at launch in the U.S., both with turbocharged four-cylinder power and standard all-wheel drive: the entry 228i xDrive and higher-performance M235i xDrive. Pricing will be announced closer to launch.

Exterior

Some recent BMW designs have generated controversy, and this one might, too. While clearly aimed to rival the new Mercedes-Benz CLA, the 2 Series Gran Coupe is less dramatic and more mainstream in design. It gets the latest big BMW kidney grille, frameless windows, standard full LED headlights and daytime running lights. A panoramic moonroof is optional.

The M235i gets its own version of the grille and more aggressive bumpers. It also has a dark gray finish for the grille, front air inlet surrounds, lower side molding, mirror caps and trapezoidal (rather than the 228i’s round) exhaust tips.

interior Design and Tech

Both models include sport front seats. The M235i gets standard leather upholstery, an M Sport steering wheel and other upgrades. Ambient lighting also is standard on the M235i.

BMW says the rear seat has legroom “almost equaling” the 3 Series, which means it’s not huge. Trunk space is 12 cubic feet and a 40/20/40-split, folding rear seatback is standard.

Manufacturer image

The center display is 8.8 inches and has BMW’s iDrive controller. The optional BMW Live Cockpit Professional includes a 10.25-inch center display and a 10.25-inch configurable instrument display; a 9.2-inch head-up display also is available. Navigation is standard. There are two USB ports in front (one of them USB-C) and two in the rear (both USB-C), and wireless charging is available — but Android Auto is not and Apple CarPlay is by subscription after a one-year free trial.

Two Flavors Under the Hood

The powertrains are familiar from the X2 models. The 228i xDrive features a 228-horsepower, turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder that puts out 258 pounds-feet of torque. The M235i xDrive gets a 301-hp, turbocharged four putting out 332 pounds-feet of torque. Both use an eight-speed automatic and come with standard all-wheel drive. BMW says the torque-splitting AWD system includes a traction system that uses selective braking to limit wheel slip.

BMW says the 228i will run zero-to-60 mph in 6.0 seconds and is limited to top speeds of 130 mph with all-season tires and 151 mph with performance tires. The M235i cuts the zero-to-60 sprint to 4.7 seconds (4.6 with an optional performance package) and tops out at 155 mph with performance tires.

The M235i additions also include extra bracing, a limited-slip front differential, 18-inch wheels (up from the standard 17-inch rims) and M Sport brakes, different steering tuning and a sportier suspension. An adaptive suspension is optional for both models, as are 19-inch wheels.

Safety and Driver Assistance Tech

Blind spot detection and a low-speed front collision system with automatic braking are standard, as are blind spot and lane departure warning systems, lane keep assist and a rear cross-traffic alert system. Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go is optional; the system uses navigation and other sensor data to limit gear changes and anticipate upcoming road conditions. Also optional is a parking assist system.

The end of an era comes today. According to BMW Group, the BMW European Delivery, a gem hidden within the Bavarians’ offerings, is coming to an end later this year. The car pickup program has been a favorite of ours over the years and has built a cult among BMW customers in North America. BMW of North America says that May 18th, 2020 will be the last day they will accept pre-reservation forms. The last month you can choose to do a BMW European Delivery will be September 2020.

If you have placed a deposit for a 2021 model and would still like to take delivery within the timeframe stated, BMW will accept the pre reservation form without a production number. TEST DRIVE: 2021 BMW 4 Series Prototype

This is our test drive and review of the 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe. The car was a prototype version covered in camouflage.

Most of the media reports devoted to the new 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe thus far have focused on its design. But now, with the keys to several prototypes in our grasp, we have the chance to write a preliminary driving report on the new car.

We also get an idea of what the second generation of the midsize coupe has to offer besides a large kidney grille. After all, the most discussed aspect of the G22 4 Series has long since been answered: it will have a whole new kidney design, which will set it apart from the 3 Series much more clearly than before.

A New Powertrain

However, the controversial design is far from the only aspect of the new 2021 BMW 4 Series Coupe that distinguishes it from the 3 Series Sedan. Behind the confident front-end, still concealed below a layer of camouflage, lies a thoroughly reworked technical package.

The new powertrain has one or two extra delicacies to take the power to a new level – both objectively and subjectively. We took to the country roads around Garching to check out what the engineers have come up with and why, and to sample how the overall package feels behind the wheel.

The team of chassis experts assembled by Jos van As set out some lofty goals for the new 4 Series. The working title they gave the G22 4 Series is “The Scalpel.” Famed for its sharpness but above all its surgical precision, a scalpel embodies the engineers’ mission statement for the BMW 4 Series Coupe – a car born to execute the commands of a skilled driver with the pinpoint fidelity of a scalpel in the hand of an experienced surgeon.

Turning this ideal end-point into reality required some concerted arm-twisting behind the scenes at BMW (dynamic excellence of this grade does not come cheap). Luckily for the driving dynamics engineers, subline manager David Ferrofino – whose sphere of responsibility includes all 4 Series derivatives – managed to convincingly sell his case.

5 BMW Repairs You Shouldn’t Do Yourself

bmw greensboro

It is good to be a BMW owner, but owning one does not mean that you have to handle the repairs as well. A sophisticated and classy vehicle like BMW needs specialized attention and the repairs need to be handled only by BMW experts working at BMW Greensboro NC auto body shops. Many BMW owners are of the opinion that taking their BMW for repairs at an auto body shop can turn to be pretty costly. They try their hands at repairing the car on own and end up making a lot of mistakes. When it comes to BMW repair, it is necessary that you consider taking help from a professional, rather than getting it done on own.

Following are some of the BMW repairs that you should never try your hands at:

Catering to a bad Windshield: When it comes to repairing the BMW windshield, then know that it is not your job at all. If the windshield is not installed correctly, then it can not only depreciate the value of the car, but also makes the vehicle vulnerable. The best solution is to get a technician from the auto body shop to change the windshield in case it is broken.

Any Issues with the Auto Body: Getting dents on the body of the car is a common thing. Even if you don’t go and hit any other vehicle, there is no reason that you will not be hit by any other vehicle. Once the body of the vehicle is damaged, it is your responsibility to get it back in the original form. That is however not going to happen if the repair work is handled by some novice person. Finding the parts that require replacement is also not easy when you are trying to fix them on own. The right door, window glass or bumper needs to be shopped for. That can be helped with when you get assistance from technicians offering BMW repair in Greensboro.

BMW-Greensboro-NC

Repairs to the Computer System: Today’s high-class vehicles are all controlled by a computer system. If that computer system in your BMW is not working well, or if there is any fault in the same, then that needs to be taken care of by a professional who has proper knowledge of the system. When a computer code pops up, it needs to be taken care of by a technician as a computer error might be a major threat to the vehicle. Minor glitches can turn into major issues by the wrong data.

Changing the radiator of your BMW car: Changing the radiator of a BMW can be very costly and if one tries their hand at the same then there are chances that the issue might not be rectified completely. A small installation error can lead to overheating of the engine. If that happens, then the hoses will blow and swell and in the long run that might cause severe damage to the engine. A new radiator may come very costly and that can all be avoided if in the first place the problem was handled by an expert in the very first place.

Fixing Issues With the Ignition System: The ignition system is one of the important parts of car. The last thing that any BMW owner will want is to hear grinding and struggling noises coming out of the car engine. The ignition system is responsible for several thousand volts of electricity that can cause one fatal shock. It is better to let the technicians offering BMW repair Greensboro handle it all.

There can be many other issues with your BMW car that you should not handle on own. However, if your BMW is facing any of the mentioned issues, then be sure that those issues need to be handled only by an experienced BMW technician.

Thailand’s biggest annual event for BMW fans “#BIMMERMEET3” showcased over 400 BMWs

Thailand’s biggest annual event for BMW fans, the “#BIMMERMEET3” was held for the third year by 2000 Publishing and Media Co., Ltd., the publisher of the Thai edition of the BMWCar Magazine. The event brought together all BMW enthusiasts and owners or ‘bimmers’ from around the country, to enjoy many fun activities, including a showcase of more than 400 BMW cars, and listen to insights and tips on BMW shared by columnists from BMWCar Magazine, at Wonder World Fun Park Ramintra on Saturday 26th January 2019.

Among the highlights were the exhibition zones. The BMW M Town was where fans could admire the top-performing luxury sports cars that proudly carry the M symbol. Fans could also enjoy the BMW CLASSIC zone, where older and rare vehicles were juxtaposed with the BMW Classic Part Ordering Program run by BMW Thailand that provides advice on and facilitates the purchase of all classic car parts.

The X-Series zone offered a glimpse at the SAV and SAC series with xDrive technology; the Ultimate JOY Experience zone, which was open to all members and free of charge to BMW owners, opened up all aspects of the BMW lifestyle, while the Z-Series Zone featured the coolest family cars and the Flea Market zone had genuine BMW accessories for sale.

For the little ones, there was a Kids Zone all ready to pamper little bimmers, along with a racetrack for mini BMW cars to ensure the children have fun.  A special highlight was the parade of more than 20 BMW cars that narrated the creation of BMW vehicles through the years from the ancestor, three-wheeled BMW Isetta, and rare models including the 503, E28, M5, E31, 8 Series, E46 CSL and E9 right through to the innovative electric BMW i8.

Inspired by #BMWStorie  Although dreams come in all shapes and sizes, the dreams of bimmers are always on four wheels. Amongst those is the dream of Chamaiporn “Pook” Paphatphong, a genuine BMW enthusiast who became the first female BMW Certified Instructor in Southeast Asia. Inspired by her father who is a devotee of classic cars, Chamaiporn’s profound passion was triggered when she had her hands on the BMW 503 which belongs to her father, Kwanchai Paphatphong, and that was when she started traveling down the winding road to success.

With the BMW 503, I was very impressed and was drawn to the charm of the car design. We are able to see the difference from the past era to today,” Chamaiporn said, “When my dad saw that I could drive, he sent me to BMW Driver Training years ago. It was also one of my dreams that one day, I will be the one that gets to teach other people about safe driving. The learning process was very harsh, but with all the passion I have with BMW, it gave me all the power to push and to go further. Finally, I received my certificate to become the first certified female BMW Driver Instructor in Southeast Asia.”  Another bimmer who has an unbreakable bond with BMW is Kirakiat Yenmanoj, a legendary motorsports racer. With racing in his blood, Kirakiat built his own race car, BMW M1, from scratch and had won championship in several tournaments.  Auto racing has been my interest since high school. Based on the replica BMW M1, I built the actual car and although I had ups and downs during the process, it was everything that I had expected,” Kirakiat said, “I had driven almost all BMW models started even before my racing career and over the years, BMW has always been my companion both on and off the track. After all that I have been through, I am certain that BMW is one of the best automobile manufacturers. My appreciation for BMW has never changed.”

BMW M Motorsport and the BMW M6 GT3 have finished in fifth place at the Bathurst 12 Hour on Mount Panorama Circuit in an emotional event for BMW Team Schnitzer. It was the team’s first race appearance since its long-time team principal Charly Lamm passed away.

BMW M6 GT3

Drivers Augusto Farfus (BRA), Chaz Mostert (AUS) and Martin Tomczyk (GER) piloted the #42 BMW M6 GT3 in ambient temperatures of up to 37 degrees centigrade on the 6.213 km mountain track. While the conditions were tough, the team challenged for a podium position throughout the 12-hour race and took the BMW M6 GT3’s best result thanks to a strong team performance.

The Walkenhorst Motorsport BMW M6 GT3, driven by Nick Catsburg (NED), Mikkel Jensen (DEN) and Christian Krognes (NOR), was forced to retire following a mechanical issue. In the GT4 class, the RHC-Jorgensen/Strom by Marc GT BMW M4 GT4 with Daren Eric Jorgensen, Brett Strom (both USA) and Gerard McLeod (AUS) finished in second place and made it onto the podium.

Nick Catsburg (#34 BMW M6 GT3, Walkenhorst Motorsport, DNF): “Of course, it’s never nice to retire but you can’t prevent bad luck; that’s racing. We have to look forward to Laguna Seca. I think we will be strong there and I can’t wait to get back in the BMW M6 GT3.”
BMW M4 GT4

Jens Marquardt (BMW Motorsport Director):

“BMW Team Schnitzer did an amazing job here at Bathurst – Charly would have been proud. A big compliment goes to every single team member and all drivers for an outstanding performance in an emotionally difficult situation. Throughout a thrilling race, the BMW M6 GT3 was always part of the leading group and was leading the race for some time. With a little more luck, a podium finish would have been possible. I feel sorry for Walkenhorst Motorsport having to retire early in the race due to technical problems.”

Augusto Farfus (#42 BMW M6 GT3, BMW Team Schnitzer, 5th place):

“We had an amazing race in terms of our personal performance as a team, but we didn’t have much more in the pocket to fight for the podium. It’s a shame we were pushed wide, but that’s racing, and we will focus on the championship ahead. Thanks to the team – it was an emotional weekend but we remained strong throughout.

Nick Catsburg (#34 BMW M6 GT3, Walkenhorst Motorsport, DNF):

“Of course, it’s never nice to retire but you can’t prevent bad luck; that’s racing. We have to look forward to Laguna Seca. I think we will be strong there and I can’t wait to get back in the BMW M6 GT3.”
