The 2018 Volkswagen Passat midsize sedan now comes up with more room and power, thanks to advanced safety tech. However, the Passat was designed to check boxes and not to overwhelm consumers.
This year, Passat boasts more powerful turbo-4 which is standard on most trim levels. The new Passat GT variant adds considerable amount of spice to the lineup with each trim exchanging some standard and optional equipment.
The Passat lineup is available in multiple levels including S, SE, SEL, GT, and R-Line. Most Passats on dealer lots are available with a new 2.0-liter inline-4 engine under their hoods. This turbocharged engine delivers brilliant driving performance at an impressive 174 horsepower and 184 pound feet torque and it cranks out power to the front wheels via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Optional on the Passat SEL and standard on the Passat GT, a 3.6 liter V6 engine is synonymous with power and energy. Along with 6-speed automatic and front wheel drive, the engine delivers 280 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque.
According to a comparative study conducted by Volkswagen Service experts, while in other VWs, the engine is smooth and responsive, the V6 is much stronger and thirstier at 22 mpg combined versus 29 for the inline-4.
The steering feels light and responsive on the hand and its chassis not be confused with sportiness. However, the Passat will never disappoint you on a curvy road.
Where the Passat really excels is inside. Unlike Toyota Camry and Honda Accord, the confidence-inspiring sedan is a sized little narrow. The interior offers enough room in the back seat and mostly high-grade materials. A nearly 16 cubic-foot trunk is another asset.
At the entry level, the Passat S shows more of its basic form lacking in the heated seats, keyless ignition, Apple CarPlay/Android, and more. Rivals mostly offer more for less. Higher-spec Passats come loaded with more attributes, and they’re a better value for the money. The sweet spot is the Passat SE with its standard emergency braking, synthetic leather upholstery, moonroof, adaptive cruise control, CarPlay/Abdroid Auto, and dual-zone automatic climate control.
One of the common features with every single trim is automatic emergency braking and the Passat has generally scored well in crash-testing. To prolong its function and life, take it to the nearest Volkswagen repair Greensboro, NC service centers.
